Titan FC 42 results: Jason Jackson gets first-round TKO of Dhiego Lima to win welterweight title

It didn’t take much for Jason Jackson to become Titan FC’s new welterweight champion – and that’s the gripe Dhiego Lima will have for a long time.

Jackson (7-2) stopped Lima (12-5) with a first-round TKO to take the champ’s title in the Titan FC 42 main event, which took place at Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The event streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.

But Lima disputed what he believed to be an early stoppage, and may have been within his rights to do so. Regardless, Jackson walked away with the belt around his waist.

Lima shot for a takedown early in the fight, hoping to give Jackson something to think about. But Jackson kept walking Lima down, and two minutes in Jackson landed a vicious right hand that put Lima on the canvas.

Lima wasn’t out, but Jackson was in quickly and landed four punches from the top – and though Lima was quick to move back to his feet after the final punch, the referee already had stepped in to stop the fight for a TKO win for Jackson.

The win gave Jackson, a Blackzilians-trained fighter, four straight wins and hope for a shot in the UFC now that he’s a Titan champ. Lima had a two-fight winning streak snapped and surrendered the title in his first defense.

In the co-main event, Farkhad Sharipov (17-7) needed some time to get going against Andrew Whitney (14-5), but once he did he was on his way to Titan’s vacant bantamweight title.

A strong first half of the fight was the difference. A second-round takedown for Sharipov saw him briefly in mount, then raining down punches while the referee looked in and told Whitney to get out or risk having the fight stopped. Whitney managed his way out, but still was almost certainly down two rounds.

In the third, both fighters landed big rights. But when Sharipov tried a flying knee, the result was him on his back with Whitney working from the top the rest of the round. Past the midway point of the fourth round, Whitney slipped and Sharipov briefly had the advantage. But Whitney stayed ready and moved to the top – though he didn’t get do much damage from the position down the stretch. With his leg bruised up from plenty of Sharipov leg kicks, Whitney took the fight to the canvas in the first minute of the final round.

He chose to let the fight back to the feet, and when Sharipov again kicked his left thigh, he caught the foot and tripped the fight back to the mat. In the final 30 seconds, Whitney got to full mount to put a cap on a great second half of the fight. But it wasn’t enough. The judges gave the fight to Sharipov with scores of 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47.

Ex-champ Holobaugh dominates Cedeno for third-round choke

In a battle of UFC veterans, Kurt Holobaugh had little trouble with Yosdenis Cedenoin their lightweight fight. Holobaugh (16-4) and Cedeno (10-6-1) opened with heavy punches and stinging leg kicks in the first couple minutes. But when Holobaugh had an issue with his left glove, there was a lengthy stoppage so he could get it replaced. On the restart, Cedeno threw a pair of spinning kicks, the first of which pushed Holobaugh back. But soon after, Holobaugh had the fight on the canvas, took Cedeno’s back, locked up a body triangle and went after a rear-naked choke. After some time in trouble, Cedeno reversed perfectly and spent the final 90 seconds of the round on top – though he wasn’t able to get much done. In the second round, Holobaugh again found success when the fight was on the canvas and dominated Cedeno throughout, alternating between short punches to soften his opponent up and looking for the choke. Still, Cedeno survived to see a third round. The third was more of the same, but Holobaugh finally had Cedeno worn down. After taking his back again, the same as in the first two rounds, he finally got the rear-naked choke sunk in, and Cedeno quickly had to tap at the 1:22 mark of the third.

Green survives third-round onslaught for majority decision

Former Titan FC featherweight champion Desmond Green (19-5) had his hands full against Martin Brown (10-4), and fatigue was a factor in the third around. But the veteran survived to take a majority decision. Takedowns and attempted takedowns were the order of the day for Green, but when he couldn’t get them done, it was Brown who was punishing Green to the body. With two minutes left in the fight, Brown went after an armbar, then briefly jumped to full mount and pounded away on Green – who was purely in survival mode. Green held on late, but continued to eat punches until he got back to his feet with 30 seconds left. Brown kept going after the finish against a bloodied Green, but it didn’t come. After the fight, Green was so exhausted he fell off his stool and needed to be administered oxygen. It took five minutes before the decision was read while Green was looked after, and when the scores were read, the ex-champ survived for a majority decision with a pair of 29-28 nods and a third card seeing it as a 28-28 draw with a 10-8 third round for Brown.

“JZ” Cavalcante cruises past Turnquest

A little less than two minutes into their catchweight fight (Robert Turnquest came in more than four pounds heavy for the lightweight limit), Gesias Cavalcante (21-9-1) landed a thunderous right hand that put Turnquest (6-3) on the canvas. Cavalcante pounced, but Turnquest tried to hang on for a single-leg takedown to weather the storm. Cavalcante went to work on top with short punches after a brief opening for a choke. That, essentially, was the story of the fight. “JZ” cruised on the feet and with top control on the ground to a unanimous decision with a pair of 29-28s and a 30-27.
